Shield
Red is the color traditionally associated with Engineer units. The wall, with the three towers, signifies the Battalion's branch affiliation, symbolizing the first major construction undertaken by the Corps of Engineers, building a system of castle-like fortifications for the protection of harbors along the Atlantic coast. The crossed axes represent the Pioneer Brigade formed in 1862 as the first Engineer element in the Army.

The crest is that of the Illinois Army National Guard.
The coat of arms was approved on 27 May 2008.
